An Offsite backup is an integral part of your backup plan
We all know that regular backups up are extremely important to ensure that your businesses critical data is safe and protected. Without an offsite backup solution, you are missing an important part of a complete backup plan. Can you imagine what would happen if you are only backing up all of your data to a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) or an external USB device in your office and there was a fire?
An Offsite backup, specifically a cloud backup solution, will aid in protecting your critical data in the case of an unexpected event at your office, like a flood or fire. Having offsite backups as a part of your disaster recovery plan you can minimise downtime and increase productivity.
“Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.”
Offsite backup solutions
An offsite backup is literally a backup that is stored “offsite” from the place where the original data is stored. ONGC Systems over the years has employed a wide range of offsite backup solutions, including having an engineer physically drive around to clients and pick up their external drives and tapes to store “offsite” in the ONGC office. Solutions like this work to a point, there are still similar risks to your data as there are with storing your data onsite.
Cloud Backup Solutions
With the not so recent introduction of cloud backup solutions, there is now a vast range of solution that can be employed to safely and securely store your data so it can be quickly restored from any location with an internet connection. With extensive testing, ONGC Systems use and recommend the following solutions:
Veeam Cloud Connect
Cloud-based disaster recovery and offsite backup
Get VM (virtual machine) backups and replicas offsite without the cost and complexity of building and maintaining an offsite infrastructure. Veeam® Cloud Connect provides a fully integrated, fast and secure way to backup, replicate and restore from the cloud. Simply choose a service provider and point your VM backups or replica jobs to the cloud — cloud-based disaster recovery and the offsite backup has never been so easy.
Back up files and folders from a Windows client or server machine. Get a highly optimised backup of your files without compromising on security. Transfer only the changed data from the last backup, and compress the data for optimal transfer over the network. All data is encrypted when it leaves the data centre, and it remains encrypted both in-transit and in storage on Azure. Transfer your data over high-speed connections, or send your initial backups to Azure using offline seeding.
Azure Site Recovery
Your environment can be protected by automating the replication of the virtual machines based on policies that you set and control. Site Recovery can protect Hyper-V, VMware and physical servers and you can use Azure or your secondary data centre as your recovery site. Site Recovery coordinates and manages the ongoing replication of data by integrating with existing technologies including System Center and SQL Server AlwaysOn.
